Spanish Club students traveled to Costa Rica over their Spring Break 2018. They visited Costa Rica for eight days and seven nights to practice their Spanish speaking skills and learn about the tico culture. Two nights were spent in a rainforest lodge. They woke to the sounds of howler monkeys high in the trees letting them know they could begin their day with a walk into the rainforest and explored the jungle flora and fauna. More tropical plants, howler monkeys and sloths were seen on a river cruise down the Sarapiqui River, a zip-line experience unlike any other took the students above and through the canopy of the rainforest among 14 different platforms, a visit to a pineapple plantation, a coffee plantation, and a visit to thermal hot springs from the Arenal volcano are just some of the highlights from this trip. The last four days were spent in a homestay where the host families only spoke Spanish. Students learned how to prepare traditional Costa Rican dishes, learned regional dances, and traveled into San José for a day of humanitarian service work. The students’ last day took them on a catamaran to Isla Tortuga where they experienced snorkeling and swimming in the ocean before returning to Wisconsin. This was an unforgettable educational and cultural adventure for these students!
