7TH GRADE FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE
This class is an introduction to the many areas of life skills students will be faced with as they mature and become more independent individuals. This class will help meet the needs of students spending time after school alone until parents get home from work. Families today are busy and more responsibilities are placed on the children within the family. Meeting the needs of these children can begin by teaching them skills they will use in their daily and future life. Area's of focus are Foods and Nutrition - learn safety and sanitation practices when working in the kitchen, learn basic food preparation skills, reading and following a recipe, and become familiar with the MyPlate food guide for healthy meal planning. They will apply these skills to prepare basic food items representing different areas of the MyPlate. The next area of focus is babysitting and the responsibilities that go with caring for younger children when parents are not home. They begin to look at earning money and the responsibilities of having and committing to a job.
8TH GRADE FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE
This is a comprehensive semester class to build on the life skills talked about in 7th grade. It is a class that can give students the opportunity to gain new skills, enhance skills, and apply these skills through group activities, class projects, and independent work. It is a class that incorporates academic areas such as Language, and Life Math to show relevance in daily life. It will allow students to continue to explore the many life skills they will eventually deal with as they continue their path to becoming independent citizens. Units of study are Relationships - self esteem, communication, bullying with a focus on the bystander, friends and family; Sewing - following directions, meeting deadlines, hand sewing and basic use of a machine to complete a high quality pillow project; Foods and Nutrition - MyPlate and healthy portion size in relation to weight management, key nutrients, and continuted food preparation skills in preparing balanced simple low cost meals.
INTRODUCTION TO CULINARY ARTS COURSE
Ready to learn some culinary arts skills? This course is designed to provide students with a review of proper measuring, naming and using of kitchen tools, along with nutritional information using the My Plate dietary guidelines to prepare a variety of different foods. Students will learn how to calculate, adjust, and prepare recipes using different kitchen equipment. Students will also be introduced to a variety of, and practice, basic cutting techniques. They will learn the importance of creating a balanced meal, and learn how to serve with an appealing plate presentation.
ADVANCED CULINARY ARTS COURSE
This class can also be taken as transcripted through Nicolet College with your grade being based on Nicolet’s grading scale.
If you want to explore further the culinary skills learned in Introduction to Culinary Skills, then this is the class for you. A more in depth look at food safety: cooking/holding temperature, food contaminants, safe food handling, along with food restaurant regulations and standards. New food preparation techniques and skills will be developed while preparing a variety of cuisines. Areas of emphasis in the class are: quick and yeast breads, pasta, dairy, meats, soups and salads. Students will experience and work with new foods as well as learn creative plating and garnishing techniques: looking at the flow of food in the workplace will be examined in relation to the foodservice industry. A look at different cultural foods will be touched on, as well as a brief look at food service careers. Students will also get the opportunity to show off their newly acquired skills in an Iron Chef Competition.
FOOD SERVICE COURSE
This is a class for students interested in working in, and learning more about the food service industry. Students will learn about small and large kitchen equipment, safety and sanitation regulations, and skills needed to work in the food service industry. This class explores the possibilities of employment in the food service industry, and possible career opportunities available with a focus on catering. First quarter will explore the food service industry, employability skills, customer service/ client base, and the dining experience. Second quarter will get into looking at standardized recipes, cost analysis, and culinary application cooking techniques, keeping food safe, seasoning and flavoring. Some of the labs will include: breakfast buffet, Soup and salad bar, cooking protein foods, quick breads and desserts. These will be set up to: create orders, serve staff or for other events. Students will be expected to plan/prepare/set up/serve and clean up for some different events during the semester. Some out of class time will be required after school or over the weekend. Certain events will count for a volunteer grade in the class as well as some of their required volunteer hours needed for graduation. This class explores the possibilities of employment in the food service industry. Students will learn about small and large kitchen equipment, sanitation and safety, and skills needed to work in the food service industry. Students will prepare and serve meals to a variety of guests each week.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT COURSE
This course is intended to increase individual awareness of the responsibilities of parents, relationships within the family and the nurturing process. This course includes prenatal development and care, a child’s social, emotional, intellectual and physical aspects of growth and development, behavioral patterns, discipline and working directly with or observing in a play school situation. Students will be required to take home a baby simulator for a weekend as part of their grade.
HOUSING AND INTERIORS COURSE
Housing and interiors will offer the student an opportunity to study types of housing in the past, present, and future. Principles of design and color will be applied to interior decorating projects in which students will be involved. An emphasis is placed on the selection of furniture, wall and floor coverings, and other home furnishings. It is the goal of this course for each student to apply the knowledge learned to create pleasing environments in both present and future homes and to become aware of career opportunities in interior design.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COURSE
This class will cover the following areas: relationships and dating, love, engagement, marriage, conflict resolution, communication, parenting, planning a family, nurturing and guiding children, and family resources. In addition we will look at the importance of family and traditions in the role of belonging and good emotional and physical health.
