INTRODUCTION TO FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Each one is a semester course.
INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH
This class is designed to give students an introduction to basic language skills in speaking, comprehension, reading and writing. Students also learn about Latin American culture in order to participate in a global society. This class offers an integrated approach to learning Spanish. Presentation and practice of functional expressions, vocabulary and grammar structures are interwoven with cultural information and language learning tips to facilitate mastery. Students learn to carry on basic conversations with classmates and gain confidence throughout the semester in communicating basic likes, dislikes, interests, hobbies, classes and daily schedules.
Introduction to German
Students will learn simple grammar and vocabulary on a wide variety of topics. They will learn to ask questions and carry on simple conversations in German. This class also explores the culture of Germany and other German-speaking countries. Students learn about Wisconsin’s rich German heritage and celebrate some of the traditional holidays. Several hands-on projects will be done during the semester including baking pretzels, singing and playing vocabulary games.
High School Courses Middle School Students May Take
SPANISH I
This is a full year course dealing with the development of skills in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the Spanish language. Culture and daily life of Spanish speaking countries are also studied. Students will also be exposed to vocabulary about activities that they want to do, like to do, need to do, know how to do, and are going to do. They will be able to describe people physically and professionally. Students will learn to use regular “-ar” “ er” , and “ir” ending verbs to ask and answer questions about daily routines and feelings. Students will be exposed to the concepts of speaking to adults as well as informal conversations with friends. This course is worth 1 High school credit and the final grade goes on your High School transcripts.
GERMAN I
German I focuses on successful communication through speaking, writing, reading and listening as well as a thorough grounding in aspects of culture. Unit activities blend different forms of communication and culture to ensure that the student meets all standards. Course strategies include warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. German I covers the basics of German language among other things the present tense, nouns and pronouns as subjects and object. This course is worth 1 High School Credit and the final grade goes on your High School transcripts.
GERMAN II
German II students build on what they have learned as they continue the curriculum introduced in German I. Course strategies include warm-up activities, vocabulary study, reading, practice activities and games, oral and written assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. A greater emphasis is placed on correct speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The conversational past is introduced. This course is worth 1 High School Credit and the final grade goes on your High School transcripts.
SPANISH II
This full year course is a continuation of Spanish I dealing with development of skills in listening, reading, writing, speaking and comprehension of the Spanish language in the present, preterit, and simple future tenses. Beyond using all learned information from Spanish I, students will be introduced to the concept of ownership, continue with number vocabulary to 1,000,000, talk about things that they have to do, talk about preferences and talk about what people can and cannot do. Highlighted themes to include: family, personal hygiene, food, clothing, and celebrations. This course is worth 1 High School Credit and the final grade goes on your High School transcripts.

GERMAN I COURSE

Students will learn vocabulary and grammar through various games as well as experience German culture through activities and authentic foods. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. Greater emphasis is placed on correct speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the German language. In order to demonstrate this proficiency, students will communicate about themselves and others in the target language using tenses in the past, present, and simple future. Culture and daily life of German speaking countries are studied as well. Successful completion of this course fulfills the language requirement for international travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
GERMAN III COURSE
German III students will use the skills they acquired in German I and II to broaden their knowledge in the areas of communication and culture while increasing their writing and reading practice in German. The past tense, both simple and conversational, will be explored. Students will learn vocabulary and grammar through various games as well as experience German culture through activities and authentic foods. Students also expand their knowledge of German culture through such themes as current events, dining etiquette and literature. Successful completion of this course fulfills the language requirement for international travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
GERMAN IV - HONORS
Entering into German 4, the students should be able to write correctly anything they can say. Besides studying more grammar, emphasis will be placed on the speaking and reading of German. Students will improve pronunciation, comprehension, and speaking skills. The German 4 student will do more original writing and speaking, which prepares them for college placement exams and the AP German course. Topics related to culture, history and the intricacies of the language will be more deeply explored. German 4 will also explore
various genres of German literature.
AP GERMAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE COURSE
AP German is an advanced placement course that focuses on higher grammatical and syntax concepts with the principal goal of accomplishing greater fluency in German. The course develops advanced writing skills through the production of essays, directed responses, journaling and other forms of writing. This course cultivates reading skills through the use of authentic texts. Listening skills are improved through a series of thematic podcasts, film clips, and recordings of native speakers, German music, and other sources. A great emphasis is placed on speaking in the target language. Communication between teacher and student is done in the target language with the exception of introductions to new grammar. Students are expected to speak in the target language throughout the class period and for the duration of the course. Students are also expected to speak to the teacher in German outside of the classroom. Students are expected to prepare and take the AP German Exam. Successful completion of this course fulfills the language requirement for international travel to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
INDEPENDENT STUDY: GERMAN LITERATURE COURSE
This course is designed to enhance German language reading skills, cultural knowledge and analytical thinking skills in German. At the end of this course, the student will have read a variety of German literary texts by various authors and in various styles of writing. The student will be able to articulate verbally and in writing their perspectives and analytical interpretations of the literature. The student will be able to make cohesive correlations between what they are reading and the cultural significance that the literature expounds. The student will be able to interpret, analyze and discuss the material via essays, journaling, blogging and oral presentations (live and recorded) in the target language.
SPANISH courses
SPANISH I COURSE
This is a full year course dealing with the development of skills in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the Spanish language. Culture and daily life of Spanish speaking countries are also studied. Students will experience various cultural activities and/or authentic foods. Students will learn a variety of vocabulary related to greetings, school, city, food, family, and household items. Students will communicate about themselves (and others) in the target language using the present tense, the simple future tense and begin basic usage of the preterite tense.
SPANISH II COURSE
In this full year course Spanish II students build on what they have learned with continued development of their skills in the target language. Students will also understand cultural norms in Hispanic culture and language. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme. Greater emphasis is placed on correct speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the Spanish language. In order to demonstrate this proficiency, students will communicate about themselves and others in the target language using tenses in the past, present, and simple future. Culture and daily life of Spanish speaking countries are studied as well. Students will experience various cultural activities and/or authentic foods.
SPANISH III COURSE
This is a full year course further developing the student’s skills in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the Spanish language. Culture and daily life of Spanish speaking countries are also studied. Students will experience various cultural activities and/or authentic foods. Students will demonstrate proficiency through informal conversation, presentations, letter writing, and composition in the target language. Students will demonstrate mastery of previously learned tenses while expanding their knowledge to include the imperfect past tense, usage of commands, as well as application of direct and indirect object pronouns. Students will also understand cultural norms in Hispanic culture and language. Learning activities in each unit are focused upon a specific theme to enhance spoken and written communication in the target language.
SPANISH IV - HONORS COURSE
This full year course is a continuation of the Spanish program concluding the study of grammar within the indicative mood and expanding student knowledge of the subjunctive mood. Students continue to refine their skills in speaking, reading, writing extemporaneously, and comprehending the Spanish language through reading short stories, legends, and novelettes, as well as class discussions all in the target language. Students in Spanish IV Honors are expected to speak in the target language throughout the class period. Highlighted themes to include future plans, technology usage, current events in the Hispanic world, and research the works and life of a Hispanic artist. Students will also understand cultural norms in Hispanic culture and language with further investigation of cultural celebrations and authentic foods from Hispanic countries. Another goal is preparation for the university placement tests administered during the spring and summer.
SPANISH V - HONORS COURSE
Spanish V Honors is an advanced course with the principal goal of accomplishing greater fluency in the Spanish language and a focus on higher grammatical concepts. Great emphasis is placed on speaking in the target language. Using extemporaneous speech students will expand their abilities in communication in the Spanish language. Students will be exposed to great literature and authentic texts by Hispanic authors to further advance reading proficiency and comprehension. Students will develop advanced writing skills through the production of essays and explore the subject of their choosing with a research paper. Listening skills are improved through recordings of native speakers, music, and video clips. All activities will focus on preparation for university placement tests taking place in the spring of the student’s senior year.
